NEW director David Stockdale says he wants to leave a “legacy” at Droitwich Spa Football Club as he aims to help the club return home.

The Birmingham City goalkeeper joined Spa’s board last month and is developing a five-year plan with ambitions to create a ground suitable for the first team to play at the same level as Worcester City.

Spa have been ground-sharing at Stourport Swifts’ Walshes Meadow since the start of last season while their King George’s Playing Field home is upgraded.

Stockdale, 33, said Droitwich “really appealed” to him and he wanted to give the West Midlands League Division One outfit a new lease of life.

“I have looked at a few clubs over the years and decided they didn’t have what I was looking for,” Stockdale said.

“When I started speaking to Droitwich it intrigued me that they were playing away from home.

“They were at a crossroads over whether to carry on playing or to maybe shut up shop which would have been a shame.

“The more I looked into it over the weeks it became more of a passion because the ladies’ teams were playing in different parts of Worcester and Droitwich and I am a big believer of everyone playing together and creating a football hub."

Asked whether he would be investing money into the club, Stockdale said: “I will over time, definitely.

“It’s something I am looking at as I want to give back having come through the grassroots and non-league.

“We are a not-for-profit company so when people ask what do you get out of it I tell them I get the satisfaction of seeing a legacy left that I had helped build along with a lot of other people that have got the same vision.”

Stockdale, who has previously played in the Premier League and recently had a spell on loan at Coventry City, said he wanted to create a “professional environment” at Droitwich.

“We have set goals that we would like to achieve that are more of a dream but you never know,” he said.

“I think a step-five facility in the Droitwich area is quite a reasonable target.

“Some things happen quickly, some things don’t.

“We are in talks to get back to Droitwich and hopefully this filters through to the lads.

“I am a footballer so I want promotion every year!

“You are not going to win every game but at the end of the day if they know somebody is rooting for them which a lot of people are then they are going to give everything they can for you.”
