FC UNITED of Worcester has exceeded all expectations by chasing a league and county cup double in its first season since forming – and they are already setting their sights on the big guns.

Gary Webb’s men overcame Station Inn of the Kidderminster & District League 1-0 on Sunday to reach the final of the Worcestershire FA Sunday Junior Cup at Pershore Town on Sunday, April 28.

The new outfit also sits top of Worcester & District League Division One with four games to go, although third-placed FC Malvern trail by five points with two games in hand.

It means the campaign has gone beyond Webb’s wildest dreams and whet the gaffer’s appetite for a crack at the top tier next season – a prospect not welcomed by other clubs forced to go up in the summer of 2018.

“It is amazing, at the season we challenged ourselves to be mid-table but here we are sat top of Division One and in the county cup final.

“We would love and relish going to the next level and that’s where we see ourselves now. Division One is a competitive league, anyone can beat anyone from top to bottom but we feel ready for a new chapter.

“Winning games gives you a feelgood factor but even when we have lost, the lads have not taken it to heart too much. They see it as a blip and take it on the next week.

“On a personal level for me and Danny (Yeomans, assistant manager), that has made it such an enjoyable experience. It has been a great ride and we don’t want it to end.

“It would be utopia for us to win the cup and without making any presumptions or being disrespectful, we just want to go out and finish the job now.”

Asked what the secret to their success had been, Webb replied: “I would love to say me but I have to hand it to the players.

“I know it is a cliché but it has all been down to the spirit, grit and determination shown by a bunch of lads that get on with each other so well.

“They have that understanding off the pitch which reflects in what they have done on it. There is a good family feel to it.”
