THE senior men of Worcester Athletic Club finished 11th in the prestigious Midland Road Relays competition at Sutton Park.

It was the club’s best finish for many years and means qualification for the National Road Relays at the same venue on Saturday.

The racing comprised of 12 legs, four of 5.38 miles and eight of 3.16.

On a perfect day for running there were some superb performances across two teams fielded by manager Dave Waldron.

The finishing times for the A team were Daniel Geisler 29 minutes 45 seconds, Robbie Campbell 29.24, Michael Jeavons 30.00, David Price 30.30, Jake Watson 17.04, Finley Smith 17.03, Thomas Stock 17.46, Chris Harle 18.28,  Stefan Sternkopf 19.06, Ciaran Connor 17.26, Kevin Mcmillan 17.41 and Adam Pollock 17.57.

The B team showed the strength in depth of the squad by finishing 34th out of 70 teams.

Waldron is left with a selection headache for the nationals with lead runners returning from absence as he targets a record-breaking performance on the tough course.

The club’s younger runners showed the future is bright in the day’s earlier races over five kilometres.

Linus Burnage finished 11th in the under 13 boys, Samuel Lea, Elliot Beard and Charlie Taylor eighth, 19th and 21st respectively in the under 15 boys, Evie Hawkesford-Johnson fourth in the under 15 girls and Tamsin Collins ninth in the under 17 girls.
