WORCESTER City Amateur Boxing Club's Owen Cooper is back in the ring looking for another national title but this time in the senior division.

Cooper, 18, won the national crown last year at the lower age bracket and stepped up this time to face 26-year-old Chimex Stanley from Birmingham.

The two 69kg men went toe-to-toe looking to win the Midland amateur senior elite title with both throwing sharp, fast shots at each other trying to score points.

Stanley came out on the bell with hard-hitting punches but Cooper, using outstanding footwork and combinations of lefts and rights, stood firm and dominated all three rounds.

Cooper won on a unanimous decision to come away with his seventh Midland title.

He now moves on to the next stage of the competition at Nottingham's Harvey Hadden Sports Village from today when he could fight over three days against some of England's best.

Meanwhile, Cooper's Worcester club-mate Ameen Khan put on an outstanding performance against Birmingham’s Ibrahim Sulaiman at 60kg.

As both battled for the Midland title the fight was fast and action-packed for all three rounds.

But Khan just got edged out by an awkward, slick southpaw as the decision did not go his way.

The Vincent Road-based city club always welcome newcomers.
