WORCESTER Warriors boss Alan Solomons says “exceptional” scrum-half Francois Hougaard is one of the best players he has worked with in his 22-year coaching career.

Solomons has often tried to avoid singling out a player for praise after a match but he could not help himself waxing lyrical over Hougaard’s man-of-the-match showing on Sunday.

Hougaard played a starring role in Warriors’ 27-20 victory over Gloucester at Sixways that maintained the club’s place in the Gallagher Premiership.

“You are reluctant to single people out but on defence Francois was absolutely exceptional,” Solomons said.

“They had a drive around the front of the lineout in the left-hand corner in the first half which he stopped.

“He is incredible. He is absolutely unbelievable.”

Asked how highly Hougaard ranked amongst players he had managed during his time as a coach, Solomons added: “When you look at the physical impact that he makes on the game he is right up there.

“He is unbelievable. His defensive performance on Sunday was exceptional.”

Since his arrival in February 2016 Hougaard has been key to ensuring Warriors’ top-flight status.

The 31-year-old has made 22 appearances this term – almost double the amount of games he accumulated last season.

Although his performances have dipped at times Hougaard has stepped up in the past two matches to steer Warriors to victories over Sale Sharks and Gloucester.

“He may have had a bit of a slow start to the season but he has picked up in the latter half,” Solomons said.

“I think he has got better and better with every game.

“I thought he was really good against Sale and was class on Sunday so he has just picked up as the season has gone on.

“He is in a good head space and is being well looked after by the medical staff and Johan (Pretorius, head of performance) who has done a great job with him.

“The main thing about Francois is that he puts his body on the line, there is no question about that.

“His physical commitment is unbelievable.”
