STAND-IN skipper Marco Mama’s season has come to a premature end after undergoing an operation on his leg.

The back rower was whisked to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford just hours after Worcester Warriors’ victory over Gloucester at Sixways on Sunday.

Director of rugby Alan Solomons said Mama sustained a dead leg in the Gallagher Premiership clash.

But he revealed the problem intensified in the evening when Mama came down with compartment syndrome, which is a condition that causes bleeding in the muscles.

“From a dead leg he then got a bit of compartment syndrome which they had to operate on and fix up,” Solomons said.

“He won’t play again this season.”

Mama played the full 80 minutes of Warriors’ derby with Gloucester as he helped his side secure a win that maintained the club’s place in the top flight.

“Marco got a dead leg and as a consequence of that it became really painful and he was admitted to hospital,” Solomons said.

“Karen Jones, our doctor, sorted it out and did a great job.

“He was admitted to the John Radcliffe Hospital.

“We are very fortunate to have fantastic hospitals and specialists in England so he has been sorted out and will probably have to have a further procedure later in the week.”

Asked whether he would be fit by the time the 2019-20 season kicks off, Solomons said: “He should be.

“He will be out for a good few months but I don’t see any reason why he won’t be ready for the start of next season.”

Mama has been captaining the side in the absence of Gerrit-Jan van Velze and Ryan Mills.

But fortunately for Solomons Mama’s injury has coincided with the return of van Velze who has not played since having an operation on his forearm in February.

Van Velze is set to lead the team out when Worcester take on Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday (3pm).
