FENCER Danielle Lawson bids to transfer her domestic talent to the international stage at the World University Games.

The ex-Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Nationals title in her first year competing for Nottingham Trent University.

This week's Naples trip provides a new challenge against the best fencers from institutions across the world but Lawson, 21, is confident she can shine for Great Britain.

However, Lawson, who has just finished her second year studying sport engineering, admitted: “I’ve had exams recently so training time has come under a bit of pressure.

“But I’m always aiming for the best result as possible. I’d be over the moon at reaching the last eight but the experience of a huge event is something I’m mostly looking to take on board.

“I didn’t quite meet the qualifying criteria which meant I had to apply for discretionary so to get that email to confirm I had my place was so thrilling and a little unexpected as well.

“I’ve competed at BUCS Nationals before, I got gold the first time I competed and then silver this year. I just missed out which was a shame.

“It’s always harder to retain your title than win it for the first time and I wasn’t too sad for the silver but I’m going to be back pushing for the gold again next year.”

Hartlebury-based Lawson’s trip to Italy in her second year as a senior continues a busy spell.

She said:“I’ve just got back from the European Championships as well so it’s all been quite manic.

"Lessons and training and last-minute fitness is going in but I’m so excited, all the kit has arrived and I’m really looking forward to it.

“I love being busy with the sport, as much training and fitness as I can get in is great, being selected is so exciting and it’s a real honour for me to be part of the team.

“I always had a passion for the sport, I’ve had amazing support along the way too which has made a huge difference — my family have always been there for me when I needed it to help me.”
