MANAGER Ashley Vincent said Aaron Brett’s desire for “a fresh environment” had prompted his departure from Worcester City.

Striker Brett bagged a whopping 19 goals in eight reserve-team matches for City, prompting fans to call for him to be given a shot in the senior side.

The 19-year-old rattled in two on his first start of the season, a 5-5 draw against Malvern Town in the Worcestershire Senior Cup last week that City lost on penalties, but has since joined Midland Football League Premier Division rivals Stourport Swifts.

Last month Vincent said he been unable to properly run the rule over Brett due to injury and the player’s lack of attendance at training.

And while those issues appear to have been resolved, the boss says competition for places may have played a part.

“Aaron was spot on, he came in and trained, scored twice when he got the chance and if the (Dunkirk) game had been on at the weekend he would have been in contention to play,” said Vincent.

“We had a conversation on the Sunday night and he felt he needed a fresh environment.

“He knows Danksy (ex-City striker Mark Danks, now assistant manager at Stourport) and it was probably on the basis of them being able to offer him more minutes.

“I have really strong competition in that area and I think he wanted to be a first choice and play.

“It was him that called me, we had a really good discussion and I wish him all the best.

“He has been really unlucky with injuries, then there was the recent situation which was blown out of proportion – the truth was he hadn’t been training at that point and I couldn’t pick someone without knowing whether they were fit or not.

“He is a special footballer who knows where the back of the net is and Stourport Swifts have a hell of a player there.

“I hope he can put the injury side of it behind him and get back on the road to fulfilling his potential, which he has plenty of.

“He showed how deadly he could be around goal against Malvern, it is good he has that about him at such a young age and I hope the move works out for him.”
