WORCESTER Warriors face an anxious wait to discover the extent of the damage to Francois Venter’s ankle.

Director of rugby Alan Solomons revealed Venter’s ankle was “swelling up like crazy” after coming in at half-time during Warriors’ Gallagher Premiership clash with Sale Sharks on Saturday.

Venter was withdrawn at the interval with Ryan Mills coming on in his place as Worcester came from behind to win 20-13 at Sixways.

Solomons said Venter, who has recently signed a contract extension, was “reasonably positive” but was waiting to undergo a scan this week.

“We have got to wait and see,” said Solomons on Venter’s injury.

“He seems to be walking around OK. We will have it scanned later in the week.

“He seems reasonably positive but one does not know.

“We will certainly get clarity on him by the end of the week.”

Asked how Venter picked up the injury, Solomons said: “He got trapped in a breakdown and someone fell on his ankle.

“At half-time the thing was swelling up like crazy.

“It didn’t look good but we were in the fortunate position of having someone of the calibre of Millsy on the bench.

“He wasn’t right, so Millsy went on and there was no problem.”

Venter made 24 appearances in his first season at Warriors after making the move from Cheetahs in the summer of 2018.

The South Africa international has featured five times this term and has now extended his stay at Sixways for two more years.

“I am absolutely delighted,” Solomons said.

“Francois is an outstanding player. He is a very experienced player who runs hard and direct and has a good skillset.

“He has led Cheetahs in Super Rugby so he has got leadership ability. He’s an all-round good guy so we are very positive that he is staying on.”
