EVESHAM United secured a first BetVictor Southern League Division One South win in five games.

The Robins saw off lowly Basingstoke Town 3-1 at the Jubilee Stadium to move within a point of fourth-placed Paulton Rovers having played three games more.

Lee Chilton’s early third-minute opener for United last Saturday was cancelled out three minutes later by Jordan Edwards for the youthful visitors.

Chilton eventually restored Evesham’s lead six minutes into the second half with on-loan Aaron Basford making sure with a third just four minutes from time.

Harry Franklin gave another man-of-the-match display as the Robins maintained their strong home record with only one league defeat at headquarters this season.

Chilton said on Twitter: "Good win again after a few bad results. Back-to-back wins always helps, getting back to how we were.

"I'm happy to be back scoring goals again, that's five in two games — thanks to my team-mates for the assist."

Carl Abbott's side now have a busy festive period, beginning with Saturday's trip to bottom-of-the-table Barnstaple Town (3pm).

The Robins host play-off rivals Cirencester Town on Boxing Day (3pm), head to Slimbridge on New Year's Day (3pm) and welcome Larkhall Athletic on Saturday, January 4 (3pm).

Chilton put the Robins ahead early on against Basingstoke after a sweeping move involving keeper Jonathan Brown, Franklin, Jack Cresswell and Kai Tonge.

Edwards' 25-yard strike deceived Brown to quickly level but the keeper later made a sharp save with Tonge, Chilton and Danny Bragoli all going close at the other end.

Tonge came off injured and Chilton was twice denied by fine saves as the sides went in at 1-1 at half-time.

But the forward doubled his tally early in the second half after running across the front post to flick the ball home.

Brown made a crucial double save on 64 minutes and substitute Basford wrapped up the scoring late on by converting Chilton's left-wing cross.

Evesham: Brown, Franklin (Basford), Smikle, Staten, Maslen-Jones, Cresswell, Sangha (Chamberlain), Bragoli, Tonge (Roberts), Chilton, Page. Subs not used: O'Neill, Sullivan.

Attendance: 187.
