CHAIRMAN Steve Goode confirmed Worcester City had asked Atherstone Town to segregate Saturday’s FA Vase – and that fans will be split for the replay.

The last-16 tie was marred by Adders supporters congregated behind the away dugout throwing beer cans and plastic glasses containing alcohol at City’s staff.

City boss Ashley Vincent alleged a lit cigarette had been thrown at his assistant Marlon Walters who later took to Twitter to claim he had been racially abused.

Worcester News staff witnessed six stewards taking no action and facing away from the crowd while at least five objects were thrown into City’s technical area during the second half and extra-time. There was also no action taken when one supporter screamed out a homophobic insult.

“We asked for segregation and got told there would be no trouble,” said Goode.

“In the end they had to put up a barrier which was fine. There were no issues with the Worcester fans but it will be segregated on Wednesday.

“I am not saying we expect trouble on Wednesday, we don’t, but it is there as an extra precaution.

“Certain people who may look to cause trouble, they are less likely to travel all that way on a Wednesday night.”

Matters threatened to escalate at half-time when City fans passed the group behind the dugouts while changing ends at half-time. The barrier between supporters was then closed for the rest of the match.

Objects continued to be thrown but Goode expressed empathy with Atherstone officials and praised City supporters for not becoming embroiled in any clashes with rival fans.

“Things were being thrown at our management, the stewards roughly did what they could,” said

“I could see things coming over and that there were a lot of stewards there, a lot more appeared.

“I went round to see that there was no hassle from the Worcester side, which there wasn’t. I think they did all they could.

“It is unfortunate. You come to a football match to watch it but when you get these big games a few idiots tend to arrive.

“I am sure Atherstone officials would say the people causing problems and throwing items are not Atherstone fans, they are people who come to the odd game.

“There were 800-odd people in the ground, Worcester probably brought 400 and I believe Atherstone’s average gate is around 200 so it could be argued those extra people were the ones throwing things.

“The Worcester fans behaved which was nice to see and we look forward to welcoming Atherstone for the replay.”

The draw means both teams made it into the quarter-final draw.

“The main thing is we are still in the hat,” said Goode.

“It was a good result for us considering we went down to 10 men and I am looking forward to the quarter-final draw and hopefully the right result on Wednesday.

“Atherstone have a very good side, though, and we will not be taking anything for granted.”
