THE Worcester Table Tennis League’s Championships was held at Bishop Perowne College.

The men’s singles final was a repeat of last year with Simon Claxton retaining his title.

Holder Claxton won his semi-final in a hard five-setter against Patryk Kowacz 7-11, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9.

Luke Moffatt saw off Mark Fiddian 11-8, 5-11, 11-6, 11-8 in the other last-four clash.

In the final, which was a repeat of last year, Claxton beat Moffatt 11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5 to successfully defend his crown.

Claxton also retained his title in the veterans’ singles, this time beating Brett Brining in the final 11-4, 11-4, 11-7.

A further success for Simon Claxton was achieved in the men’s doubles when he teamed up with his son Leon Claxton to win against Lukas Gatkiewicz and Simon Morgan in the final 9-11, 11-7, 11-2, 14-12.

In the veterans doubles, which featured a draw for partners, Brining and Graham Thompson defeated Fiddian and Ray Rennison 11-3, 11-7, 11-5.

The veterans singles handicap final saw Brining enjoy a further success, beating Fiddian 19-21, 21-17, 21-20 at the end of a long day.

The Tyler Cup handicap event saw most players taking part and in the final Moffatt defeated Morgan 21-14, 16-21, 21-12.

The Doug Young Cup for players in Division Two saw Leon Claxton beat Jesse Bunn in a close final 12-10, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9.

The Michael Pye Cup for Division Three players resulted in Charlie Burford seeing off Dave Elliott in the final 11-8, 11-6, 11-8.

The Martin Birbeck Cup charity doubles, with drawn partners, ended with Brining and Bunn beating Kowacz and Rennison in the final 11-6, 5-11, 11-5, 11-2.

In the intermediate singles for players under 21 Bunn defeated Dom Foden in the final 11-2, 15-13, 11-6.

Once again Janet Hunt was in charge of the 10 events on the programme which were played on six tables and took 11 hours to complete earlier in March.

The standard of play was high throughout the whole day.
