WORCESTER Hockey Club took part in a virtual fundraising event to help build a new hockey centre.

The centre is being built in partnership with RGS Worcester and Worcester City Council, and the event was the brainchild of junior section lead Dickie Head.

The event was originally supposed to be held outdoors but, due to the coronavirus restrictions, had to be held online.

In the style of Children in Need and hosted on the club's Facebook page, Dickie Head was the online host supported by a team of supporters in other locations.

The all-day event featured a host of live events such as fun PE from first XI goalkeeper and local teacher Tom Dalton, and hockey skills coaching and a Q&A from Steve Williams, who is head of junior coaching and director of PerfxHockey.

Other sections of the club ran their own fundraising events including physical challenges, some in fancy dress, and an auction throughout the day.

There were also fun family competitions such as rock, paper, scissors, flour.

The day ended with an online quiz, bingo with more than 80 players and in true fundraising style, regular announcements of the running total as donations came in throughout the day.

The club was also able to make a donation of £500 to Worcester Foodbank.

Manager of Worcester Foodbank, Grahame Lucas, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive this cash donation which will enable us to buy what products we need when we need them.

"It is wonderful that Worcester Hockey Club has teamed up with Worcester Foodbank in this way to help those in our city who find themselves in crisis and in need of help."

Club chairman George Chakko-George said: "We had three main objectives for the day and I’m really proud of those involved and the club as we exceeded our expectations of what we hoped to achieve in this.

"Our objectives, in summary, were to provide an opportunity for all our members and supporters to engage with the club even while still following Government rules of lockdown and social distancing, to raise funds to help develop the club and outwardly to look beyond the club and hockey and support those in our local community who may be struggling particularly in this current time of Covid-19."
