LIVE: Worcester Warriors press conference updates - Sept 1

Our live feed has now finished.

  • WARRIORS ace GJ van Velze could miss the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder.
  • The South African fans’ favourite was withdrawn early in the second half of Sunday’s brutal mauling at Exeter with medics waiting for swelling to subside before deciding whether to operate.
  • Sam Lewis picked up a head injury, joining Tom Dodd who was replaced at the 11th hour at Sandy Park, on the sidelines.
  • On van Velze, director of rugby Alan Solomons said: “We have to wait for the swelling to go down and take a scan of it to see whether it needs to be conservative treatment or some sort of operation. We should know in the next few days.
  • “It is fair to say he will not be playing over this period, we start again on November 21 so that is a three-month period. It depends on whether there needs to be some sort of operation.”
  • Dodd still “has his protocol to go through” after his head injury assessment last week “so it is unlikely he will be considered” for Friday’s home clash with Bristol at Sixways (6pm).
  • On Lewis, Solomons added: “I think the turnaround time for Sammy is too short. He definitely won’t make it.”
  • There was better news with Ed Fidow returning to training and medics happy with the progress of hooker Matt Moulds.
  • Warriors announced Moulds had undergone surgery on a long-term foot complaint in July, which included a screw being inserted into the affected area.
  • He will be joined by Conor Carey in targeting a return in November for the belated start of the 2020-21 season, despite initial hopes that the Belfast-born prop would play some sort of part this month. Jamie Shillcock is two to three weeks away from consideration.
  • “The doctor is really happy with Matt’s scan, it is now a question of loading it up,” said Solomons.
  • “I don’t see Matt being able to play over this period but he should be good to go when we start the 2020-21 season.
  • “Conor Carey is in a similar boat, again in the 2020-21 season. Ed Fidow was back in training today and Shilly should be back in two or three weeks which is good for him and for us.”
  • Melani Nenai is back after his ban and "very much" in contention for Friday.
