CITY's Midlands Football League Premier Division season kicks off on Saturday as they make the journey north to Newark fresh off the back of their midweek win (3pm KO).

Ashley Vincent's men began their FA Cup journey on Tuesday night in the extra-preliminary round with a comfortable 2-0 win away at Rugby Town.

Liam Lockett scored both goals for City, who now turn their attentions to the start of the league campaign at the weekend and Vincent is keen to get going.

"The league is our bread and butter," he said.

"The chances of us having a really strong season in the FA Cup is unlikely, we know that but realistically we want to go as far as possible and the start we had the other night was great.

But the league is ultimately our main focus and we're raring to go and looking forward to getting started in what will be a long hard season.

"We started off at Newark as the beginning of last season and ended up on the wrong side of the result so we don't want a repeat of that this weekend.

"They're a strong side and it'll be a close, competitive game but I think we're better equipped this time around but only time will tell."

There are a few new faces in the squad following the summer additions and also some old faces returning to the fold.

Vincent insists he is happy with the group he has and praised there attitude in what has been a difficult period for all.

"It's been a long long time without football," he added.

"But we are all in the same position. We have got characters who are willing to go above and beyond for each other and that's what you want at this level and it's what we have here.

"We are happy with the squad we have and we'll probably be in a position where we will have to leave players out of the matchday squad."

Heading into the league opener on Saturday City continue to wait on the fitness of Nat Kelly and Jamie Smith, who both came off with injuries in the win over Rugby Town.

"Jamie Smith came off with a tight hamstring and we're hoping that's all it is.

"Nat Kelly is a tough kid and he took a bit of a horror challenge, but he's a tough kid and we're hoping it's not too serious and hopefully he'll be fit for the weekend."

The game kicks off in Newark at Hawton Lane at 3PM.
