MORE than half of the midweek matches scheduled to take place in Worcester City’s league have been called off due to confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus.

Midland Football League Premier Division fixtures at Stourport Swifts, Long Eaton United, Heather St John’s, Coventry Sphinx and Coventry United have all been postponed.

Stourport will feel particularly aggrieved having missed out on a trip to Selston for the same reason on Saturday to now see a home clash with Gresley Rovers fall by the wayside.

Long Eaton’s fixture with Boldmere St Michaels has been delayed due to a suspected case associated with one of the away club’s players, while Selston’s issues emanating from one of their previous fixtures means they cannot travel to Sphinx.

A member of staff at Coventry United “showing signs of Covid-19” prevents them from hosting Newark, City’s conquerors on Saturday, with the knock-on effect being that Heather’s match with Walsall Wood, City’s FA Cup opponents on Saturday, is also off.

With Walsall Wood seemingly unaffected, the extra preliminary round tie at Claines Lane in set to go ahead (Saturday, 3pm).
