FOOTBALL clubs across the county are nervously anticipating news regarding their seasons after the government announced a second national lockdown would begin this Thursday

The likes of Worcester Raiders, Malvern Town, Evesham United and Bromsgrove Sporting are all classed at “non-elite” level and in line with the new restrictions, could have their fixtures suspended until December.

Raiders are in the West-Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division at step six of the English football ladder and chairman Steve Harris is fearing the worst.

“Following on from the announcement this weekend from the Prime Minister, we believe our league is not classed as elite status,” he said.

“The league is holding an emergency meeting today to verify that our season has been indeed suspended.

“Although this is very frustrating for everyone involved , safety is paramount.”

Bromsgrove Sporting play at step 3 and told Worcester News they are still awaiting confirmation.

“At present we are waiting to hear from meetings that are being held with the Alliance Leagues, The F. A. and the DCMS.

“Until this happens it is pure speculation.”

Evesham United, of the Southern Division One South, released a statement via their official Twitter channel.

“At present we are awaiting definitive statements from the FA and Leagues regarding fixtures etc over this forthcoming period of lockdown.

“Any information will be put out online.”

The chairman of the uhlsport Hellenic League, in which Malvern Town play, expressed his thoughts through a statement on the official website.

“As you will be aware the government announced a countrywide Lockdown to commence on Thursday morning.

“The FA are in talks with The DCMS and clarification of the exact situation will be with us on Thursday morning.

“My personal feeling is that we will have a break for a month or so from Thursday, until The R number is reduced significantly."

"Then there will be a short period of preparation, before a re-start.

"Preparation will be needed for many things including to review fixtures to take into account which areas are open for business, and to confirm the Covid situation within each club.

"If necessary we will ask for a season extension."
