Worcester City's under 18s gave an excellent account of themselves but eventually bowed out of the FA Youth Cup after a 4-1 defeat at League 1 Burton Albion in the first round proper.

Early goals in either half proved their undoing with a spectacular third putting the tie out of reach.

City grabbed a consolation that their endeavours deserved via an own-goal three minutes from time before their hosts completed the scoring a minute later.

Nevertheless, coach Steve Humphreys was proud of his side's efforts on the night and in the competition.

"The lads were a bit nervous," he admitted.

"To be playing in a Football League stadium with tannoy announcements and seated spectators and all that goes with it, that was to be expected, but settled into the contest and competed particularly well during the second part of the first-half and it was a shame that half-time came when it did.

"We had a couple of training sessions last week but no competitive matches for over a month due to lockdown whereas Burton were able to train throughout and looked the accomplished academy set-up that they are," added Steve.

"My players still acquitted themselves very well and, whilst disappointed with the result, they can all be proud of their achievement in reaching the first round proper of the competition and will hopefully learn from their involvement.

"The FA Youth Cup experience is the pinnacle of their participation within the Club's youth section and the perfect platform for the squad to push onto first team football in the not-too-distant future."
