MINISTER for Sport and Tourism Nigel Huddleston will be visiting Worcester City's Claines Lane tomorrow afternoon.

Mr Huddleston has been a busy figure in the last 18 months with the coronavirus pandemic causing chaos to sport at all levels of the game, none more so than non-league football.

It was back in March of last year when non-league divisions were halted whilst the government got to grips with the ongoing spread of Covid across the country but football would not resume until the start of the 2020/21 season in August after the 19/20 campaign was declared null and void.

Since then it has been stop start for almost a year, including two more national lockdowns that put a stop to any prospect of the game returning below professional level.

But with the vaccination programme going seemingly well (touch wood!), clubs like City are planning for spectators to return to grounds to watch their teams again.

But how many will be allowed in is something many supporters will be interested to find out.

Earlier this week Mr Huddleston faced a grilling in the Houses of Parliament from lockdown-sceptic colleagues, mainly from his own party, on whether test events held at sporting, music and other venues venues had caused Covid-19 outbreaks.

The government have announced further pilot events at big sporting competitions such as the Euros and Wimbledon in recent days.

On July 19th restrictions in England are expected to be lifted completely, with a return to normal life being promised. But it is still unknown what attendance figures will look like at that stage.

City will be hoping to welcome back as many of their supporters as possible when they begin their pre-season schedule next week. Their first home game will be against Worcestershire rivals Evesham United at home on Saturday July 10.
