Pre-season: Cheltenham Saracens vs Worcester City

  • Full-time: Saracens 0 vs 1 City (Sterling, 54)
  • CHRIS Sterling was on target as Worcester City kicked off their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 win over Cheltenham Saracens on Saturday afternoon.
  • Striker Sterling cut in and tucked home a fine effort into the bottom corner as manager Tim Harris watched on in his first game as City boss.
  • Six trialists were involved throughout the 90 minutes and several impressed in what was a good workout for Worcester, who did lose captain Craig Jones to an early injury.
  • Harris named a strong side to start the game, with debuts handed to all three of the summer signings; Dan Westwood, Louis Ezewele and Billy Shaw.
  • It was a quiet opening half an hour but City grew into it and should have taken the lead close to the half-time whistle when Josh Willis' low ball in evaded both new-striker Westwood and Dave Reynolds.
  • Seven changes were made at half-time as five trialists were introduced and they made a significant impact early on.
  • The energy levels were increased and the players on who looked keen to impress manager Harris.
  • Ten minutes had passed when Sterling opened the scoring after good work from the trialist playing at left-back in the second period presented the powerful striker the space to work a shot.
  • He cut inside and wrapped his left-foot around a shot which clipped in off the inside of the post.
  • City looked much more cohesive and attacking, without really creating many more opportunities.
  • The hosts threatened on a few occasions but keeper Dan Jezeph was never troubled.
  • It was a good workout for City but it will be a completely different test on Tuesday when they face National League North side Leamington FC (7.45pm).
