Worcester made it six wins out of seven as their pre-season came to a close with a 2-0 win over Kidderminster Harriers at Claines Lane on Tuesday night.

Goals either half from Dan Westwood and Billy Shaw handed City the victory as new number one Brendon Bunn claimed a clean sheet on his debut.

Despite the result head coach Tim Harris was disappointed with the way his side played.

He said: “With any game the important thing is you win it. It doesn’t matter if that’s a pre-season friendly. The objective is to win the game. The second objective is to win it playing well and tonight we didn’t play well but we’ve won the game.

“I can’t be too critical because it is about winning football matches. However, I felt that you have to give Kidderminster a lot of credit. I thought that the young lads from them worked extremely hard. They made it tough for us and we didn’t reach anywhere near the levels that we played the other day and that was disappointing from my point of view.

“Nevertheless, pre-season is over, and we look to go to Coventry united on Sunday which will be a severe test for us and where we are at this present moment in time.”

While he was disappointed with the night’s performance, there were a few standout performances.

On City’s new shot-stopper he said: “I don’t think there’s any debate. Everybody knows what a good keeper he is. He’s pulled off a fantastic save and his distribution was good so yeh really pleased with him.”

When asked for a man of the match, Harris added: “I thought Billy Shaw done really well, Brendon (Bunn) done well, Sam Hall at the back. It’s probably unfair to select individuals because it is a team performance, and the team performance today was not what we expect.”

Reflecting on pre-season, Harris had no complaints about his team’s ability to earn the win however he added that Tuesday nights performance was a step below what they had produced in previous matches.

He said: “I thought our tempo was not as good as Kidderminster’s to be totally honest with you.

“I think against Stourbridge and Leamington we pressed the ball a lot better than we did today. We allowed them a lot of time and space where you know you can’t allow teams to do that.”

He added: “I thought the pre-season, when I looked at it and what we arranged, was a really tough pre-season. You’ve got to bear in mind that Leamington are always a tough team to play and they’re in the National North and to go there and get a positive result in a really good performance was very pleasing.

“The Stourbridge game. They’ve got a nucleus of a very, very good squad and to put five of them was again quite pleasing.

“There’s other elements of pre-season where I think we have swapped and changed the side around and it has been a little bit disjointed at times. That could be criticised for us today because we have made a lot of changes.

“Hopefully now we can just get back down, and we have got a reasonably big squad although we have got a few injuries that we have to contend with. All in all, pleased with how it’s gone”

Worcester return to competitive action on Sunday in the FA Cup against Coventry United.
