WORCESTER City boss Tim Harris admits his side’s defending in the opening game of the league season has given him cause for concern as they threw away a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 with AFC Wulfrunians on Saturday.

Having led by two twice in the second-half, a crazy five minute spell saw the visitors work their way back into the game before a late equaliser saw the hosts drop two points.

“I thought the game was scrappy,” said Harris.

“There was a lot of off the ball incidents going on and things that stopped the flow and the referee needed to look at that and stamp his authority on it.

“But its not about the referee and I am not here to talk about him. Overall, there was some positive things but there were some bad things too.

“Our defending again was Kamikazi to say the least in terms of players taking responsibility, smelling danger and dealing with it and we tend to take a step backwards in that regard.

“We need to be fronting people up and that’s the really disappointing thing, especially after getting ourselves into a 3-1 lead.

“Everyone needs to do the basics well and we didn’t. We should have seen the game out better than we did but credit to them, they chucked bodies forward and asked questions of us and we didn’t answer them.”

Harris says that the way his side are struggling to control games is making him consider further reinforcements.

“The reserves have got a game on Sunday (yesterday) at Stourport and we have a few trialists in there that we want to have a look at,” he said.

“Because at the moment, I am not happy with how we’re controlling games. We’re letting ourselves down, we’re making naive mistakes and we need to toughen up a little bit.

“We were 3-1 up in the second-half and in the end, we could have lost.

“It’s two points dropped and in the manner that we did, it’s very concerning and disappointing.

“We can’t expect to win matches if we concede goals in the manner we did today and I think it’s going to take a little longer than I expected here to get things right”

City go again in the Midland Football League Premier Division next Wednesday at home to Highgate United as they look to get their first win of the campaign.

Highgate were 2-0 winners over Racing Club Warwick in their opener at the weekend.

“We will dust ourselves down and have a look at things on Monday. But there’s still a long way to go and still plenty to work on.

“We have to move on, we have a game on Wednesday and we have to look to get those three points.”
