TWO Worcestershire clubs have come together to provide free football this Christmas when they meet in a cup quarter-final later this month.

Redditch United and Alvechurch have both agreed that their Worcestershire FA Senior Cup last-eight tie will be free entry for all supporters on Thursday, December 29 (7:45pm kick-off).

A joint statement, released by Redditch, said: "We have worked closely with Alvechurch to ensure this is a free entry game as both clubs would like to give back to the local community over the festive period.

"Both clubs understand the festive period is a tough time financially for a lot of people, especially given the cost of living crisis and the rise in energy bills. This is a chance to enjoy what will be a competitive derby at no cost between the two sides as both clubs will be hopeful of entering the semi final."

The two Step 3 clubs met last November in similar circumstances when they went head-to-head in the same competition.

It was free entry for that game as well when Redditch won 3-1 and now both chairmen - Richard Thorndike (Alvechurch) and David Faulkner (Redditch) - are hopeful of putting on a memorable evening for both sets of supporters, especially given the current financial climate.

"It’s not often that fans get to see a local derby at this level for free but when the Redditch United Chairman called to propose free entry for our Worcestershire Senior Cup fixture, I jumped at the chance," added Thorndike.

"With the cost of living crisis and the hike in energy prices, we both feel it is the right thing to do, especially given the time of year.

"We hope for a packed Trico Stadium and a good festive atmosphere which I think both teams deserve.

"Make no mistake, we’ll be taking this game seriously, we owe them one!”

Faulkner added: "We are very excited to be able to open up our gates for this festive fixture.

"Both clubs have had fantastic seasons so far and we have both backed up the football with our growing work in the community.

"Christmas, especially this year, could be a hard time for some. I am sure our small gesture will go a long way for many people."
