IT has turned out to be a great start to 2023 for Worcestershire trainer Tony Carroll at Wolverhampton Races this week.

The Pershore-based horse trainer celebrated a double on Tuesday with jockey Clifford Lee, which was then overshadowed on Thursday by a shock win at the same track.

My Genghis (16-1), again ridden by Lee, turned over massive favourite Sergeant Pep (1-9) in the BetUK Over 40,000 Live Streamed Races Novice Stakes in the 13:45 to land a huge win for the Cropthorne Stud stables.

After the race, Carroll tweeted: "It might be a 'shock' because of the price of the favourite, but My Genghis is a great little horse owned by Wedgewood Estates, I am a huge supporter of the yard. He was second last time out and was given a lovely ride by Clifford Lee. Congratulations to horse, jockey and owner."

Before the upset, Carroll had already tasted success earlier in the week.

On Tuesday evening, he twice celebrated victory as Lee once more provided the goods.

Lee won on board both Moon Over The Sea (10-1) and Toplight ( 5-2 favourite) to land an impressive double for Carroll.

That was then backed up with an astonishing performance from My Genghis on Thursday afternoon, who wowed those in attendance at Wolverhampton and all over social media.
