TWO goals inside the opening 25 minutes proved decisive as Evesham United booked their place in the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup semi-finals after a surprise 2-1 win at Bromsgrove Sporting on Tuesday night.

Jeff Putz opened the scoring after just 10 minutes before captain Adam mace made it 2-0 with a long range effort as Evesham flew out of the blocks against their higher level opposition.

Dan Sweeney scored from the penalty spot handed Sporting a lifeline just after the hour mark but despite plenty of huff and puff, could not find the equaliser to force the game to penalties.

Evesham join Redditch United in the final four, with the two other quarter-final ties - Stourport Swifts vs Kidderminster Harriers and Droitwich Spa vs Pershore Town - postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

The Robins came into the game fresh after having their league clash at Southern League Division One South league leaders Sholing FC postponed due to the weather.

And they started with intent against Step 3 Sporting, taking the lead after 10 minutes of play.

Putz beat the offside trap to race onto a through ball before slotting the ball past Ollie Taylor in the Bromsgrove goal.

The hosts dominated possession but Evesham were proving a tough nut to crack and doubled their lead in the 24th minute as Mace fired home from long range.

The Robins were in dreamland and had one foot in the semi-finals at half-time with a two-goal cushion.

But the tie was not done and when Mike McGrath was taken down in the box following a corner, the referee pointed to the spot and Sweeney made no mistake to half the lead.

McGrath hit the bar in the last half-an-hour and more penalty appeals were waved away from the home side but Evesham held on for the upset win to go within a game of the final.
