BILLY Shaw struck either side of half-time to give Chris Cornes his first win as Worcester City boss in their relegation scrap at bottom-of-the-league Market Drayton Town on Wednesday evening.

Shaw rounded the keeper with what was the final play of the first-half to give City a vital lead at the break before his low left-footed strike doubled the lead a couple of minutes before the hour.

The visitors had chances to score more but after four defeats from four, Cornes will not be worried with that as he tasted success for the first time since being appointed in mid-November.

It was also the first win for City in over two months and was three points that took City up a place into 17th and three points clear of the relegation zone.

The fixture had been moved from Monday to Wednesday due to the weather, and the game was delayed by a further 15 minutes on the night after City players and officials had been held up in traffic.

It was a tricky pitch to play on but both sides attempted to put passes together but it was a game that lacked any real quality in the opening 25 minutes.

But City were playing the better stuff and almost took the lead in rather scruffy fashion when Kyonn Evans' scrambled effort was cleared off the line by centre-half Seydon Bamba.

The breakthrough came right at the end of the half as Shaw beat the offside trap to latch on to a through ball, round keeper George Scott and tuck the ball into the far corner.

There was an element of relief at that point going into the sheds, but City came out a better team in the second period and took the game to Drayton.

The hosts were struggling to cause City problems and at the other end, Worcester began to look dangerous and in the 56th minute, Shaw made it 2-0.

A free-kick was not cleared properly and the midfielder took a touch before swivelling inside the box and striking low into the bottom corner with his weak foot.

Evans could have made it more when he went around Scott but in the end it was a routine win for City, even if there was so much riding on it.
