WORCESTER City's next run of league games looks set to challenge their belief that relegation has always been more of a fear than reality.

A run of three home games against sides in the top half of the Midland Football League Premier begins this weekend with the visit of Lichfield City to Claines Lane this weekend.

Following their clashes with Lichfield, Shifnal Town and Darlaston Town, they then have away trips to relegation rivals Uttoxeter Town and Wolverhampton Casuals within three days.

It's a run of five matches that will ultimately decide their fate in the MFL Premier and as things stand, their status as a Step 5 club remains under threat.

They currently sit fourth bottom, with the two lowest sides being relegated, ahead of Casuals on goal difference only and Uttoxeter (who have played two games more) by three points.

It is all in their hands still and manager Chris Cornes has insisted that he is "not worried" by relegation.

"We have three tough games coming up," he said.

"Uttoxeter have played a few games more and are three points behind us so relegation is not an immediate concern at the moment but we are still having to look over our shoulder a bit.

"But ultimately we have to dig in and go again this weeked. Anyone can beat anyone in this league. We have to make sure we put a performance in for our fans on Saturday when we play Lichfield, they deserve that from us. "

City played all five of their first games of 2023 away from home, so are now in a run of three on the spin at Claines after last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Casuals.

Worcester have managed just three wins at home all season long and haven't tasted victory at Claines since the start of November (2-1 win over Racing Club Warwick) and Cornes is eager to see that put right this weekend.

"We just need to go to basics and work as hard as we can," he added.

"The supporters certainly deserve to see us win at home. I am not sure if we have some sort of psychological block when we play at home because we seem to be a different side away from Claines Lane.

"The fans have continued to turn up in their numbers so it's important we produce something for them this weekend."
