STEVE Davies tries to act like he is too cool for school, but you could see the emotion in his face when he hit that century at Old Trafford.

It was a special innings and he knew that.

He was very excited and he knew that he had pulled off something amazing giving the time that he had.

It was also a timely reminder to the selectors that he is still around.

Last year everyone was talking about Davo as being a future England wicketkeeper and quite rightly so, but recently there hasn’t been much talk about him.

And with so much being said about Tim Ambrose at the moment, Davo has got to be right up there in the rankings — he is after all the leading wicketkeeper in the country in terms of first class catches.

The win at Old Trafford was a real team effort. People will think that everyone would have had a Twenty20 mentality — I can assure you they didn’t.

The match was of course set-up by Davo’s knock, but we put pressure on Lancashire with the ball from the start.

Everyone contributed. The main thing was that we restricted them early on, meaning that they had to go after the big shots and we took the wickets and racked up our first win.

It looks like everyone can beat everyone in this first division, so if we can get on a roll then we should be right up there again.

We had another good week in the championship only for the rain to get the better of us on the final day and force the match to be drawn.

It was good to see Graeme Hick get some runs in the first innings and then Stephen Moore smashed his fifth century of the season with the second knock.

But the unsung hero with the bat was Ben Smith. He is playing beautifully at the moment and he has scored four half centuries in his last five knocks.

Obviously Simon Jones’ five-for set-up the bowling nicely but like Benny, Matt Mason is another unsung hero for us — he does the donkey work with the ball keeping things tight and creating the pressure and allowing the rest of the lads to get the wickets.

On the last day in our match with Derbyshire waiting to find out if we were going to get any play, we watched Rambo in the dressing room and when the game was called off we went out and did a fitness session all pumped up from having watched Big John.

I’m off to Wormsley this week to play a Twenty20 game for the PCA Masters against South Africa. It’ll be good to catch up with some old friends and, with Vikram Solanki and Mooro going, hopefully we’ll pose a few questions of South Africa ahead of their match with England.
