HEREFORD United manager Graham Turner has called on his players to show they are good enough to mix it in League One.

Rooted to the foot of the table after their 6-1 drubbing at Bristol Rovers last weekend, the Bulls are still to show any points for their efforts.

Out of the Carling Cup and struggling to attract players to Edgar Street, Hereford missed out on West Brom’s Jared Hodgkiss this week as the defender headed north of the border to sign on loan for Aberdeen.

The Edgar Street club’s start to the campaign has hardly been encouraging.

Yet the Hereford boss is refusing to chastise his players — privately or publically.

“The challenge for us all is to prove that we are good enough to operate at this level,” he said.

“The players have to learn quickly that the pace of thought and movement is a lot faster in League One and they must be capable of adapting to that level.

“We worked tremendously hard to gain promotion, now we have to adjust to the extra demands of this higher division.

“Above all, despite the setbacks, I would much rather be where we are now than competing in the division lower.

“We knew it would not be easy but now comes the big test of character to work our way out of this current position.”

With the transfer window closing on Monday night, Turner is hopeful that this week’s arrival of midfielder Stephen O’Leary will not be the only new face before mid-night.
