WHEN you look at the start of the season we have had at Worcestershire it can be sum-med up quite easily — double thumbs up for our one-day game, double thumbs down for the four-day cricket.

The wicket at Nottinghamshire was a good one and we missed a trick in not reaching the follow-on total having come so close.

I suppose we are still a little naive when it comes to first division cricket and that is something we need to quickly sort out.

There can be no hiding from the fact that we have made a poor start. We need to stop the rot — and quickly.

There were a couple of positives to come out of the game at Trent Bridge. Steve Davies played superbly for his century and Daryl Mitchell’s first innings knock was a hard-fought performance.

Nottinghamshire batted well for their 500 and I wouldn’t say that we bowled particularly badly — it was average. But we seem to be getting bullied by other teams in the Championship, whereas in the one-day stuff we are the ones doing the bullying.

‘Davo’ has had a good week. He followed his century with a fine 47 in Ireland on, with-out being too unkind, a club-type wicket.

The perfect score in Belfast would have been 200, but to get 180 was a decent effort and Gareth Andrew helped with his knock at the end where he scored 23 of 12 balls.

Gareth then followed it up with the ball. He bowled superbly with Ashley Noffke who was probably too good — their players weren’t good enough to get a nick.

By the time Ian Fisher and I got on, Ireland were out of the game, they never looked like getting anywhere near our total.

That match was a potential banana-skin and we didn’t bowl as well as we did at Hampshire the previous week, there are still areas to improve on.

We are in Yorkshire today for the start of our third County Championship match and it’s really pleasing to see Alexei Kervezee getting his debut. He was playing really well last season until he tore his hamstring playing for the second XI against Gloucestershire last July.

Alexei has been scoring runs all winter for Holland and I’m really chuffed that he has got his debut. He has stepped up his game over the winter and is definitely a player for the future. I’m sure that all the boys will be behind him.

The England squads are announced this week and it is only human for me and a few of the Worcestershire lads to be keeping an eye out.

These are exciting times for us and we’ll be waiting to see what happens.

But the main priority for us is focusing on our four-day cricket — that is our main job.

We all need to make some significant contributions to put things right.
