HEREFORD United are on the verge of signing a striker as manager John Trewick’s squad continues to take shape.

An unnamed marksman has agreed terms with the Edgar Street club and is poised to put pen to paper on a deal today.

There are currently 14 players signed up for the new League Two season but none of them are strikers following the departure of Steve Guinan to Northampton and Andy Williams and Febian Brandy to parent clubs Bristol Rovers and Manchester United.

However, that looks about to change as Trewick puts the finishing touches to his squad for the 2009/10 campaign.

“I am very hopeful that there will be someone in today,” he said. “I have agreed everything with the agent and I am hopeful he will sign.

“Assuming I get the striker, I am still in the hunt for another one and I have got a list of a dozen players who I am trailing at the moment.”

Trewick also said agreements were in place for other targets although none have yet been finalised.

The Hereford squad returns for pre-season training on Thursday ahead of the first warm-up match at Pegasus Juniors a week later.

The Bulls boss, who brought in four players last week, including former Kidderminster Harriers keeper Adam Bartlett, added: “I feel that the squad is starting to take shape.

“I would like to operate on a smaller squad rather than a bigger squad. I would like to have around 18 players and keep a bit of flexibility to bring in one or two at a later date.”
