DROITWICH suffered their first setback of the season in Crusader Worcestershire League Division Two, going down to a 24-run defeat at Monmouth.

A fine 60-run, sixth-wicket partnership between Neil Davies (45) and captain Andy Fletcher (27) appeared to have put Droitwich in the driving seat.

They needed only 44 runs from nine overs with five wickets left only for a rapid collapse to put paid to Spa’s ideas of extending their lead at the top of the table.

Droitwich tasted defeat for the first time this season, being bowled out with three overs to spare.

Monmouth made a good start with the bat with David Teague scoring 63 not out in their 205-8 from 50 overs.

Davies was the pick of the Spa bowlers, returning 3-44.

In reply, openers Paul Bryan and Max Young took the score to 29 but were adjudged lbw within several balls of each other.

Neil Wright looked good for 37 before Fletcher and Davies took charge but Monmouth secured the victory.
