STAR Kempsey batsman Craig Weston insists mental application and the guidance of his captain are the secret to his amazing run of form.

The 39-year-old opener is averaging a jaw-dropping 151 for the Crusader Worcestershire League Division Seven table-toppers.

His most recent exploits saw him blast a career-best unbeaten 179 in Kempsey’s winning draw against Enville Thirds and the fine innings has been rewarded with our cricketer of the week award and a £30 voucher for the Fearnley Factory Shop.

Weston began the season with Division Three side Worcester Dominies and Guild but, after a fall-out, opted to join the village side and he hasn’t looked back since.

In his last five knocks, the all-rounder has piled up scores of 105 not out, 55, 136, 132 and 179 not out. If that wasn’t enough, the medium-pacer also claimed two five-wicket hauls.

Although he has been accused of playing at a level far below his ability, Weston insists his current success is down to hard work and encouragement from new skipper Mark Williams.

He said: “In my first game for Kempsey, I wasn’t really taking it seriously and I was bowled for a golden duck by quite a slow bowler but, when I was out, I was totally gutted.

“After that, Mark took me to one side and told me that he believes in me — he has really helped to motivate me. I want to thank him for helping me to achieve the most controlled and concentrated performances of my life.

“I am really proud of my performances and I think good things are happening at Kempsey Cricket Club with my addition and several other new players.“ Weston, who has also played for Himbleton and Old Elizabethans in the past, added: “Obviously the standard in Division Seven isn’t as good as some of the teams I’ve played for in the past, but there are still some really good players. There are lots of talented youngsters and wily older players.

“This has been the best season of my life and I am playing to the best of my ability, which is something I didn’t always do in the past. I have been reading a lot of books on batting and that has helped me too.

“My 179 not out was my best score in the league, beating the 176 I’d hit in the past. I did once make 186, but that was in a friendly.

“One reason why I am doing so well recently is my mental application. I am too good for this standard of cricket, but it is my new mindset that has helped me to score so many runs.

“I can’t play this weekend because I am away, but hopefully we will stay top of the league and then I can carry on where I’ve left off the following week.

“I am hoping to score a double hundred this season, but we would have to bat first in a match.”
