SURVIVING in the LV County Championship Division One is going to take a mammoth effort — but we still have a chance.

There are times when you have to be realistic but we are not down and, until that is the case, we will work our socks off to give ourselves the best opportunity to turn things around.

If we can get the right result in the next couple of matches — starting against Nottinghamshire next week — we have got a small chance, but it has to happen now.

There’s no point thinking about two or three games from now because it could be mathematically, over by then. We have got to get a win on the board and it’s important we get the results sooner rather than later.

The squad of players we have are as good as any in the country but belief is such a fragile thing. I would back any of our players every time they go out on the pitch, we just need something to spark that belief and we have got a small chance of staying up.

It has been disappointing how things have gone this season, as a team and personally, but we have all been working rigorously with every discipline.

Against Sussex, I felt pretty good in the first innings but I didn’t do as much bowling as I was going to because of Matt Mason’s efforts, although I did take the wicket of Yasir Arafat.

In the second innings I thought I bowled relatively well. I tried to force a wicket and leaked a few runs but when a team only needs 90 to win you are on a bit of a hiding to nothing as a spinner so it can be difficult at times.

However, we didn’t quite apply ourselves as we would have liked to with the bat on a pretty good pitch at Hove. We were a few runs light and we didn’t bowl well on the last day.

I am not involved with the seconds’ game against War-wickshire this week but Darryl Mitchell, Moeen Ali and Ben Smith are going to play. They want to get some time in the middle because the last thing they want to do is wait for a match when they are under pressure to be winning.

As for my future, while we still have a chance I want to put all my energy into helping Worcestershire stave off relegation so I am trying not to think about anything else.

However, I was not surprised to be left out of the England one-day squads because I am competing with Graeme Swann and he’s done an excellent job.

Stephen Moore and Steve Davies were also omitted but I don’t think Stephen would have anticipated a call-up because he is in contention for the longer form of the game.

But I was shocked Steve was left out. He’s a massive talent for the future.
