IT was ‘finals day’ for the Evesham Golf Club knock-out competitions with seven matches taking place.

The club’s knock-out matches are always keenly contested and it was fitting that the finals took place on a sunny day with the Craycombe Links course in splendid condition with the greens running fast and true. The Duc’s Cup was won by Mike Abraham, who saw off Alan Dufty five up with four holes to play, over 36 holes.

The prestigious scratch cup, The Frogmore, was won by Ryan Cleary, who beat Oliver Farrell one up.

It was great to see two of the club’s best youngsters reaching the final and overcoming several seasoned adults on the way.

The handicap cup, The Byrd, was claimed by Martin Fletcher, who edged past Darren Nightingale on the first extra hole after being all square after 18.

The Alan Wood Plate, competed for by all those who lost in the first round of the Byrd, was won by Andrew Witts who triumphed two-and-one over George Parker.

The pairs event, the Canada Cups, was won by Frank Meadows and his son Adam, who did well to beat the accomplished pair of Bill Dobie and Geoff Burton four-and-three.

The Ward Bekker Shield foursome’s competition was won by Andrew Witts and Jim Jones, who were victorious over Richard Dyde and Mark Harrison two up.

The mixed foursomes competition, The Frank Vincent Cup, was won by the ladies’ and men’s captains, Patsy Brumage and Ian Tyrrell, who won a close match against Joan and Ken Hunt on the 18th.
