JOHN Trewick is not bothered if Hereford United fail to finish as Conference runners-up -- so long as the club wins promotion.

The Bulls travel north to Morecambe tonight in a re-arranged fixture aiming to cling on to the coat-tails of runaway leaders Accrington Stanley.

With just six games remaining, hopes of overhauling Stanley's 13-point advantage look remote.

The Edgar Street club are in pole position to finish second -- for the third successive season -- but that would not please coach Trewick unless United won the play-offs to clinch a Football League return.

"It would be nice finishing second, but only if we go up," said Trewick. "I don't care if we finish third, fourth or fifth. I just want us to get promoted."

A last-minute equaliser from stand-in captain Tamika Mkandawire grabbed United a point in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Woking.

After crashing at home to Kidderminster, Trewick insists his side showed good character at the Kingfield Stadium.

He added: "It was a good point. What we had to do is not lose after the Kidderminster game.

"We scored very late on but, on reflection, we should have won the game. We were not at our best in the first-half, but we were still the better side and we hit the crossbar.

"We dominated in the second-half and took the game to Woking. It took a long time before we made the breakthrough, but it was nothing less than we deserved."

Boss Graham Turner may be forced into changes at Christie Park where United have not won since November 1997.

The seventh-placed Shrimpers have won their last four home games against Canvey Island (1-0), Kidderminster (2-0), Forest Green (3-2) and Burton (3-1).

Centre-back Tony James is a major doubt after being withdrawn at Woking with a groin injury, but Dean Beckwith can step in to resume his partnership with Mkandawire.

Andy Ferrell is serving the second match of a three-game suspension, while Simon Travis, Stacy Coldicott and Guy Ipoua are still struggling for fitness.

Striker Adam Stansfield is itching for a return and may replace youngsters Stuart Fleetwood or Andy Williams.

Trewick added: "Adam is getting there, but needs one or two 90-minute games to get where he wants to be."
