AN action-packed programme of summer activities has been drawn up to keep city youngsters entertained during the summer holidays.

Worcester City Council's sports development department has been working closely with St John's Sports Centre, Nunnery Wood Sports Complex and numerous youth clubs and community centres across Worcester to provide the `Summer Activities Programme' for 2006.

The programme offers the children taking part the choice of three week-long activity courses.

One choice is a holiday camp involving hockey, athletics, netball, basketball, football and gymnastics, which is run by professional coaches throughout the holidays at one of the two leisure centres and is available to seven to 13-year-olds.

Option two features activities at St John's Sports Centre and Nunnery Wood Sports Complex such as quad biking, funbusters and laser shows. This is aimed at five to 12-year-olds.

The alternative is a range of multi-skills sessions, which will take place in the city's parks, community centres, and youth clubs. These free-of-charge sessions are open to ages five to 18.

Peter Shaw, the council's sports development officer, said: "This is without doubt the most user-friendly and action-packed programme we have ever produced.

"It is very exciting to be able to tailor activities to meet the needs of our residents and children. I fully believe children from across the city will be able to develop their skills and participate in exciting activities but, most importantly, have fun in the summer holidays."
