BROMYARD’S Chris Gwynne blitzed the Alvechurch and Hopwood innings after his first senior competitive bowl for the club.

The teenage off-spinner ripped through the visitors with a sparkling 7-10 from six overs for the town’s third team on the artificial wicket at Queen Elizabeth High School.

Gwynne, also a keen footballer, was instrumental in dismissing Alvechurch’s fourths for 123 from 36 overs with two victims clean bowled and five caught.

The former junior team cricketer then boosted his batting average with five not out in their 127-7 as they recorded a three-wicket success in Worcestershire League Division Eight.

Gwynne’s efforts have earned him the latest Worcester News cricketer of the week award and a £30 voucher to be spent at the Fearnley Factory Shop.

Thirds skipper Dave Clegg admitted: “I thought Chris would do a job but I didn’t think he’d do that well!”

The match had started well for second-in-the-table Alvechurch with Steven Hamblin and Mark Rollins (both 41) sharing in a 94-run opening stand. But, once they departed, only James Morrison (13) really troubled the scorers.

Alvechurch were struck by Gwynne, back from university in Nottingham, who collected four maidens in his six overs, and team-mate Matt Beesley’s 2-42 in 11 overs.

In reply, Bromyard batsmen Jeffrey Bayliss (26), youngster Henry Roper (38) and Clegg (18) scored vital runs while wickets fell around them.

It was left to Gwynne and Martin Reece-Pitt (4no) to lead Bromyard home after 37.1 overs for a 20-point success which puts them fourth in the eight-team table.

Amazingly, Gwynne’s only previous competitive bowling on record saw him take four wickets for Bromyard Under 13s in the 2005 season, including a haul of 3-7.

But he has now jetted off on holiday so Alvechurch will be glad to avoid him in the return fixture on Saturday.
