GAVIN Hurren says he feels privileged to be playing for Worcester City.

Just two weeks ago, the 25-year-old was turning out for rivals Redditch United in a 1-1 draw at Nuneaton Town.

Yet, within days, the cash-strapped Reds, cut their budget to zero and parted company with manager Matt Gardiner.

City boss Carl Heeley seized the moment and offered Hurren the chance to ply his no-nonsense style of defending at St George’s Lane.

The former Kidderminster Harriers player impressed in the holding role as City defeated Boston United 2-0 last Saturday.

He then partnered Ryan Clarke in the centre of defence in Tuesday’s 2-1 win at Halesowen Town in the Worcestershire Senior Cup.

It has been an eventful time for Hurren but he is delighted to be on board and wants to make his mark for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “It’s sad what’s happened at Redditch with there being no money but I’m really happy now I have got this opportunity to come and play at Worcester.

“I played against Boston and really enjoyed it, it was a great three points, and now I want to kick on. I really want to do the best I can for Worcester.”

Hurren, who began his career at Harriers before spells with Mansfield, Crawley, Tamworth and Gateshead, is expected to start today’s home match against Stalybridge Celtic (3pm).

He knows what to expect, having been in the Redditch team beaten 3-1 by the Cheshire men last month.

He said: “They are a good passing team and have got a few good players so it’s going to be a test for the boys.

“I can’t see why, if we play like we did last Saturday, we won’t get the three points.”

Meanwhile, City will play their postponed game against Alfreton Town at St George’s Lane on Saturday, February 26 (3pm). They visit Workington on Tuesday, April 12 (7.45pm).
