WORCESTER Wolves head into this weekend’s British Basketball League double-header knowing they cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to stay in the hunt for the play-offs.

Sitting just one place outside the top eight, the Uni-veristy of Worcester-based side have lost their last four matches.

They are also four points behind eighth-placed Leicester Riders, who have the better head-to-head record and two games in hand, and only two points clear of 10th placed MK Lions, who have six matches to make up on Wolves.

Any hopes Paul James’ side have of extending their campaign beyond April 10 remain slim but, with eight of their final 13 matches on their own court, Wolves will not give up until it is mathematically impossible.

Tonight they host struggling Worthing Thunder (7pm) who come into the game under the cloud of a 14-match losing streak which includes a 90-79 December thrashing by the university-based side.

Wolves’ England international forward David Watts knows the importance of this meeting.

He said: “We need to win this one. We are a bit down because we’re on a losing streak, but we’re hungry for the win.

“It’s very easy to feel sorry for yourself. If you work hard for something, it hurts if it doesn’t come off.”

Wolves then head to championship contenders Cheshire Jets tomorrow (5.30pm) hoping they can cause an upset.

Watts added: “We can’t give them a good start, because if you give them a step they’ll make you pay for it. They’re very aggressive, both offensively and defensively.”
