WORCESTERSHIRE swimmers are gearing up for an attempt to break a Guinness world record held by Germany.

One hundred youngsters aged between 14 and 19 will swim 100-metres freestyle in a relay on Sunday, June 19, and look to beat the current record of one hour 53 minutes and 13 seconds.

Swimmers from the Worcester, Droitwich, Pershore, Evesham, Wyre Forest, Ledbury, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Ross-on-Wye, Haden Hill, Halesowen, Oldbury, Stourbridge and Warley Wasps clubs will tackle the task in Wolverhampton following the county relays competition.

Each swimmer will look to be sponsored and split the funds raised between two charities, the Midlands Air Ambulance and Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.

The event is being supported by the regional Amateur Swimming Association, Bennett’s Farmhouse Ice Cream, Marshfield Farm Ice Cream and Stratford Fine Foods Ltd as well as Amros Promotions and Swimrite.

Anyone who can help with corporate or individual sponsorship is asked to call Neil Monkhouse on 07786-154411 or Sarah Allin on 07860-731602.
