WORCESTER Canoe Club boasted three paddlers in the Great Britain junior squad at the International Race Pas De Calais in Boulogne, France.

Jonny Tye, Emily Lewis and debutant George Mitchell were selected after shining at the April qualification regatta in Nottingham.

With strong international competitors from nine nations, selection for major international events, like the junior European and world championships, was up for grabs.

All of the Worcester members reached their finals and Lewis stepped up with the first gold in the 200-metre event.

She beat junior squad members from France and Belgium as well as all the senior paddlers involved.

Lewis showed her class with another gold in the junior women’s 1,000m event on her 18th birthday.

She was joined on the podium by fellow GB members Katherine Trotter and Rebi Simon, both from Elmbridge, who were second and third respectively.

Tye demonstrated his hard work put in over the winter by reaching the junior men’s 1,000m ‘A’ final.

The first of his medals came in the K2 1,000m where he was third.

Tye and Mitchell competed in the K4 1,000m event, joined by Mark Clive and James Webster, from Gailey and Bradford-upon-Avon.

The crew finished second after being pipped by a strong French team. The competition was a fine experience for the Worcester teenagers.

A regatta this month will be the last selection event for the Junior European Championships in Croatia towards the end of June.
