A TWENTY20 best bowling performance from Shakib Al Hasan and half-centuries from James Cameron and Alexei Kervezee steered Worcestershire to a 41-run success over Yorkshire Carnegie.

Shakib, whose previous best was 4-34, claimed 4-31 as the Royals bowled their visitors out for 142 for as they attempted to chase the County’s total of 183-7.

Kervezee (56) and Cameron (55) shared a 77-run fourth wicket stand as the Royals bounced back from their 19-run defeat at Leicestershire Foxes the previous day.

Moeen Ali got Worcestershire off to a flying start with the bat after winning the toss as the New Road side raced to 56-2 in the six-over power play.

The 23-year-old fired a 20-ball 40 before pulling Richard Pyrah to fielder Azeem Rafiq.

Following the loss of Shakib to leave Worcestershire 70-3 in the eighth over, Kervezee and Cameron batted superbly with a 77-run fourth-wicket partnership in just under eight overs.

Kervezee was the first to 50 off 34 balls, his maiden half-century in the competition, before pulling Adil Rashid to Rafiq for 56.

Cameron then brought his half-century up with a six but fell in the penultimate over to Ajmal Shazad for a 37-ball 55 with four fours and three sixes.

Worcestershire, who had three of their previous home Twenty20 matches washed out, put on a good batting display to close on 183-7.

The wicket looked good for the batsmen but when Yorkshire lost Jonathan Bairstow in the opening over of their reply to Jack Shantry for one, the Royals must have thought their quarter-final charge was back on track.

Andrew Gale (20) got his side back up with the run-rate only to pull at Gareth Andrew and find a leading edge to Cameron at cover to leave the visitors on 29-2. Then Worcestershire’s spin quartet took charge with Shakib, who recorded figures of 2-11 at Leicestershire the previous day, picking up two wickets in his opening over.

Anthony McGrath looked to drive him out of the ground only to miss the ball and be bowled for four, while Adam Lyth went two balls later, charging down the ground to be stumped for 12.

Saeed Ajmal almost had a wicket in his opening over but a diving Moeen could not hold onto Shazad’s (9) drive in the sixth over.

However, that drop did not prove costly as Shakib tempted him the following over and Cameron gratefully took the catch on the long-on boundary.

Just as the spinners looked to be winning the match on their own, Shantry returned to dismiss Garry Ballance (26) with the first ball of his second spell to leave the visitors on 86-6.

Shakib claimed his fourth wicket with the dismissal of Joe Root (26) before Ajmal tempted Rashid down the pitch to be stumped for two.

Andrew (3-17) wrapped up the Yorkshire innings in the 19th over.
