ONE of the city’s keenest sporting rivalries ended in a 47-run victory for Royal Grammar School Worcester over King’s School.

RGS batted first with opener Andrew Curtis in sparkling form as he notched a flawless 124 not out, reaching his century with consecutive sixes as he tore into the King’s attack.

He was supported by a good innings from Zac Turley (60) and a blistering onslaught from Ed Pollock (77no) as RGS posted a mammoth 292-2.

Beating the total was always going to be a tall order for King’s and so it proved once their main threat was removed by an out-swinger from RGS paceman Wills Bury.

King’s fell well short of the target on 245-9, meaning RGS continued cricketing dominance over their rivals, having won seven and drawn one match since 2003.

“It’s pretty special for any player to carry their bat through an innings,” said Phil Newport, RGS first XI coach.

“So for Andrew to play such a dominant innings in a match against our keenest rivals speaks volumes.

“He was well supported by his team-mates with both bat and ball.”

The RGS second XI also had the measure of their city rivals, winning by six wickets.

Chasing 193, RGS made fine progress with James Hobbs (40) and Dan Heath (32) to the fore before James Brookes struck a six to decide the game.
