HOME talent Jonny Tye was one of the stars at the National Marathon Championships hosted by Worcester Canoe Club on the River Severn.

The teenager retained his boys’ under 18s K1 and K2 titles and earned selection for the World Championships in Singapore during October.

King’s School Worcester pupil Tye was partnered by Bradford-on-Avon’s James Webster in the K2.

Prolific Worcester paddler Stuart West was also a double national champion, winning the men’s over 39s K1 and over 34s K2 with club-mate Dave Pedlar.

James Parker did likewise in the men’s over 59s K1 and over 54s K2 with fellow Worcester member Chris Skellern.

Silver medals were scooped by Sue Hawthorn in the women’s over 44s K1 and Matt Thornton-Brown in the men’s over 54s K1.

Ryan Sneddon and Dan Staines secured second place in the men’s under 23s K2 as did Andy Nevitt and Julian Gilbert, who were runners-up to Parker and Skellern in the over 54s K2.

There were a string of bronze medals as another veteran paddler caught the eye in the form of Janet Parker in the women’s over 54s K1.

Stephanie Holmes and Laura Ferguson, of Banbury, managed third spot in the women’s under 23s K2.

Young Worcester prospect William Bird, who was 12th in the K1, joined Bradford-on-Avon’s James Missen for a bronze in the boys’ under 16s K2.

Caitlin and Robyn Andrews also medalled in the girls’ under 12s K2.

Jayne Moran and Hawthorn were third in the women’s over 44s K2.

Bird and Simon Williams, who finished in the national K1 top 10 at Worcester as well as securing sixth in the K2, have their fingers crossed over selection for a forthcoming international meeting in France.

Worcester’s Chris Mynette won K1 Division Seven with Jenny Gage second and Sneddon third in Division Nine.

Nottingham managed the most club points with 920 as Worcester were fourth with 639.
