HEREFORD United chairman David Keyte says the money from the sale of Stuart Fleetwood will be ploughed back into the squad.

The 25-year-old striker joined Blue Square Bet Premier club Luton Town for an undisclosed fee ahead of Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Keyte said the move took him by surprise but it would allow manager Jamie Pitman to strengthen his squad.

Although permanent deals cannot be done before the window reopens in January, the loan market comes back into operation on Wednesday.

Keyte said: “We didn’t have an agreement with Luton in the afternoon and then I had a call to say Stuart was aware of it and was willing to agree terms with them to go.

“It was money that wasn’t required by the club so that will go back in the manager’s pot.

“The deadline has gone so it will have to be for loanees to freshen up the side and that’s back with the manager.

“We have received money from Luton Town that we were not chasing so that is there for the squad.”

Keyte was pleased with Hereford’s displays in the 0-0 draw at Bristol Rovers and 4-1 defeat against League One Bournemouth in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy when Fleetwood was a substitute in both.

He added: “We performed well at Bristol Rovers and for an hour at Bournemouth.

“What we need to do is score some goals.”
