AFTER a summer of comings and goings at Worcester Wolves, one of the few returnees from last year’s squad has been awarded the captaincy of the side.

Last season, guard Callum Jones, 25, played fewer minutes than he’d have liked but is confident he can earn increased court time and contribute to his new role.

He said: “I feel good about the appointment. It shows that coach Paul James has a lot of confidence in me.

“I feel I know the system well now, so that I can help bring on the newer players and get them acclimatised to what we want to do.”

After Jones gave a steadying display in last Saturday’s 65-23 friendly demolition of Reading Rockets, Jones knows Guildford Heat’s visit to the University of Worcester on Saturday will be much harder.

Wolves’ British Basketball League Trophy Group Four opener starts at 7pm.

Jones said: “We settled down well against Rockets and, in particular, showed good character on defence.

“We now need to repeat this through the new season.”

Wolves director of basketball and head coach James explained why he had chosen Jones to lead his team.

He said: “Now that Callum has completed his masters degree, he will be able to focus totally on his game.

“With a lot of new faces in the squad, we need someone to help them get to know what is expected.

“Callum has demonstrated to me that he is the right sort of person to help others develop.”

Wolves’ first league game of the season is on Friday, October 21, at Glasgow Rocks.
