OVER the past year we have typically done pretty well against my old club Guildford Heat and tonight hopefully we will see more of the same.

But it is not going to be easy, games against them never are, so if we can stick to our game-plan at the University of Worcester this evening (7pm) we should have a good chance.

We are going to have to play for the full 40 minutes, we cannot relax.

Guildford are a very tough side. They have retained players like Julius Joseph and Mike Martin but I’m looking for us to be a little bit more organised and structured than them.

I think by starting the season with the British Basketball League Trophy helps teams try and pick up a few wins for when the league campaign gets going.

I have to admit that I was quite pleased with how we played in our friendly match against Reading Rockets last weekend.

Although we started quite nervously, which was something that I expected being a relatively new team, when we settled down and relaxed we played some really good basketball.

We spent the first quarter of the match finding our feet and the players were a little unsure of what they were doing but, once they got used to our system, I was very pleased.

One of the aspects of the game that I was impressed with the most was how we defended.

We only conceded 23 points throughout the match and that was against a team that is used to winning trophies — even if it was in the league below.

We managed to shut Reading out completely in the third quarter of the match and in the final 10 minutes they only scored five points.

I was also impressed with Carlos Fernandez. He has played at a higher level in Spain, even though he didn’t get much game-time.

He is a great utility player, he is someone who can score points, defend and create for the guys around him.

I fully expected him to show his quality when he arrived here, but he is playing a lot better than the DVDs of him that I saw over the summer.

I have also named Callum Jones as Wolves club captain this season.

Last year he had a bit of a tough campaign as not only was he playing in the BBL but he was doing his masters degree in just 12 months.

Callum is a level-headed guy and I think it is great that he can now concentrate on his game and I’m confident he will lead by example.

I think that our two new American rookies, Tommy Freeman and Richie Gordon, are going to be tremendous assets to the Wolves this season.

They are young and still finding their finding their feet but they have already shown their skills and I’m looking forward to seeing them develop over the course of the season.
