MALVERN opened their home campaign with a resounding 54-5 win against Camp Hill in Midlands Two West.

A controlled catch-and-drive move from the line-out trundled over the line for Shaun Lancett to secure the first try of the game after only three minutes.

Malvern continued to force the pace. Richard Hobbs, on his home league debut, put in some big hits, while Nick Tisdale and Chris Smith dominated the line-out all afternoon.

In the 14th minute, Malvern won a scrum and Julian Lambert whipped the ball out to Dave King, who in turn made the space for Dave Wilkinson to run in a try, converted by Richard Fleming.

Four minutes later, a loose Camp Hill clearance was fielded and King again shimmied his way through a bemused defence to set George Roberts off on a 50-metre run to the try-line, giving Fleming the easiest of conversions.

Another driving maul set up a backs move, ending in Lamb going over and Fleming again converting.

Fleming's penalty and a sin-binning for their own flanker added to Camp Hill's woes as Malvern again moved up a gear, another rumbling maul giving Lancett his second score.

A King break then put Wilkinson in for his second try. Roberts was unlucky as, having broken three tackles, he put his foot in touch while running in at the corner.

Cooper came on for Richardson, showing great enthusiasm and verve, as Fleming's penalty increased the lead.

An opportunist try from Leach gave Camp Hill some consolation, but another maul was driven to the Camp Hill line and Lancett completed his hat-trick of tries.

David Robins, Malvern's director of rugby, was delighted with the performance and the result.

"We went up a level from last week and certainly from last season," he said.

"Our organisation in the pack, courtesy of Nick Tisdale's training, has brought focus and discipline to our play up front.

"This gives our half-backs more time and space to work in and, with Dave King showing touches of near-brilliance, we were in unstoppable form on Saturday.

"The whole pack got involved in the loose play. Taylor's ball-carrying, Hobbs' tackling and Hill's growing maturity all made their mark.

"Jamie Anderson, slowly getting back to his old self, showed several good touches, while George Roberts is obviously thriving and getting used to scoring after some frustrating times last year.

"Shaun Lancett, meanwhile, will be dining out for months about his well-deserved hat-trick."

Now Robins wants his side to show their mettle when they come up against Kenil-worth on Saturday.

He added: "Now we have to put the euphoria behind us as we meet the clear pre-season favourites on their own turf at Kenilworth next week.

"Last season they were the best team we played and they beat us soundly home and away, and were unlucky not to get promotion.

"Saturday will be a measure of just how good we are and our chances of getting near the top of the table."
