WORCESTER Lawn Tennis Club's junior stars were not fazed by experience at the annual senior championships finals.

County junior Michael Shipley set the Northwick Close club's competition alight by winning the men's singles.

The 14-year-old defeated defending champion Simon Rose in three sets but was not the only teenager to shine.

First team player Jo Mason, 16, reached the women's final and gave eventual champion Jayne Weedon a stern test over three sets.

Club coach Nick Aylett was joined by 12-year-old David Hodgetts, also a county junior, in the men's doubles and they saw off Rose and Anthony Duggan in the final.

Jan Mason, mother of Jo, took a doubles' double with Weedon in the women's event and Duggan in the mixed.

Bev Hawkins and Pat Wood were runners-up in the women's doubles, while Rose and Stacey Fieldhouse made the mixed final in the competition backed by Startin Honda.

Aylett, joint coach with Jonathan Bradshaw, was delighted with the youngsters' efforts and said: "It's good that we have got these kind of juniors involved at the club and coming through.

"We're so glad to have a 12, 14 and 16-year-old doing so well in our senior tournament.

"The club is really moving forward and we have a lot of things on offer, like coaching, new floodlights and plenty of chances to play tennis."

Aylett is also optimistic over the men's firsts' prospects in the forthcoming Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League which starts next month.

They have recruited a string of players and now have four county representatives, Bradshaw, Allen Benbow, Michael Crookes and Aylett himself.

As well as coaching at the club in mid-week and at weekends, there are indoor sessions at Bishop Perowne High School on Saturday afternoons for four to 11-year-olds.
